Jorge Ben has to be one of my all time favourite brazilian musicians. i first heard his music around 10 years ago and instantly loved it and have enjoyed his music ever since. if you have grown up in Brazil during the 70’s and 80’s Jorge Ben would be part of your childhood soundtrack. Probably most famous for penning the now classic “Mas Que Nada” and “Taj Mahal” which was the subject of a successful plagarism law suit against Rod Stewart for his song “do you think i’m sexy”.

Dam Funk comes to the deep pacific to touch base with the local peeps who feel the soul boogie produced by LA’s finest.

Known as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie Funk,” Dãm-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: ‘Dame’ as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-’80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.

As a DJ/selector, Dãm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it’s not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.

Blue Smoke sheet music c/o Te Papa Museum

This is the only original rendition i could find of Blue Smoke, the first ever recorded and released NZ pop song. Composed by my great uncle Ruru Karaitiana who lived with his people in rural Dannevirke. A natural musician and confident on the piano and guitar Ruru started a band called the Ruru Karaitiana Quartet and with his fellow musicians would travel to Wellington in the weekends to play late night club gigs and then return back to the farm in rural southern Hawkes Bay.

As Ruru was leaving to go to war a friend commented on the blue smoke coming from the ship and that was the inspiration to write this song. On returning to New Zealand the song was recorded and released in 1949 and two years later was covered by Dean Martin.

My grandmother recalls Ruru asking her to sing with the band with just one condition, she change her name from Huia to Jo, Ruru didn’t think the maori name would help her cause. She flatly refused and apart from family gatherings never sang publicly with her husbands cousin.

Madame Butterfly is taken from the fusion album ‘fans’ which i remember buying as a 12 year old and i think i still have now. how crazy, i can imagine after the sex pistols and then the supreme team he was like, what now? I know, lets take opera to the streets, lets mix it with street music. it worked and as a kid it introduced me to madame butterfly and carmen. Mr Mclaren was like a musical entrepreneur or even a music industry venture capitalist, always looking for the next big thing. R.I.P.

Te Ohmz return this weekend for another session at Provedore. With Iraia and Sage as the rhythm section and then Ryan Prebble and Mara TK sharing the vocals and rhythm guitar duties this should be pretty dope.

Rio is one of the baddest bass players in the country and now after trinity roots the brother has gone on to work on his solo album and has an EP and 12″ called Wahine Toa. Shit is dope with solid production from FFD’s DJ Fitchie. now out on vinyl at conch. Rio is on the road playing bass with Bic Runga, Tim Finn and old D. Dobbyn.
